There's no denying it, the Nissan LEAF EV has quite an electric personality (apologies for the pun). The first iteration of the truly revolutionary electric vehicle was introduced in 2010 as a 2011 model, and the 2012 iteration is already in the wings. Everyone from drivers, to the media to car critics fell head over heels for the EV. And, while most admiration in the automotive industry turns out to be nothing but a fling. The love affair with the LEAF seems only to be growing stronger.
One of the very first awards the Nissan LEAF ever won was nearly two years ago, in 2012. Popular Mechanics magazine honored the first-ever mainstream EV with a "2012 Breakthrough Award." We're now at the close of 2011 and the LEAF has collected a total of eight accolades - the most recent additions include the "JAHF Car of the Year" and "JAHF Car Design of the Year" awards presented by none other than the discerning selection committee at the Japan Automotive Hall of Fame (JAHF).
What made the Nissan LEAF stand out from the many other notable cars introduced to the market this year? The real question is, "What didn't?" The Nissan LEAF displayed courage enough to pioneer the industry as the first mass-market electric vehicle. The car is attractive not only for its fuel-saving capabilities and highly competitive technology but also for its world-renowned status; zero-emissions, and exclusive EV-IT system than provides effortless usability but also for its modern design language; and wind-noise reducing aerodynamic body.
If nothing else, the "JAHF Car of the Year" title reinforces the LEAF EV's previously bestowed "2011 World Car of the Year" award. And, Nissan Sunnyvale promises you, it only gets better for the 2012 model year. As Edmunds.com says, "With the 2012 Nissan LEAF, a real (and realistically priced) electric car [promising 106 mpg city/92mpg hwy] is finally here."1
