LEAF-based EV Sports Car?

The upcoming Nissan LEAF EV for 2011 is so popular that the car is already sold out, even before it hits dealership lots later this year. Now, Nissan is thinking about adding a LEAF-type two door sports car that's all electric to their line up.

Inside Line reported an unnamed source at Nissan has tipped them to upcoming EV sports car concepts, with LEAF technology to follow the standard LEAF. They even go so far as to christen the car, as potentially the "370Z-E." The name alone makes us think this will never happen.

Another possibility is an EV version of the Essence Concept from the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, though saddling that car's fantastic design and muscular yet svelte proportions with LEAF-type power would be a travesty, to say the least.

As shown in concept form, the Essence is a 592-horsepower gasoline-electric hybrid. LEAF, on the other hand, is powered by a battery pack and electric motor that is good for about 107 horsepower.

If Nissan does build an electric sports car, it will probably show up under its own nametag and as a Nissan vehicle, but not named "LEAF" or "370." Since it will be unlike any version of their current vehicle lineup, Nissan will want it to stand out instead of getting "lost in the crowd."
